Rook Week 2002

ROOK WEEK 2002 documents the time-honored tradition of freshman training at Norwich University, the nation’s oldest private military university.

Rook Orientation Training, the initial ten days of training takes place prior to the start of classes. Rooks arrive, say goodbye to their families and immediately make the transition from civilian to recruit.

ROOK WEEK 2010 was produced by Norwich Communications students for academic credit.

The University

Private, combining military tradition of nearly two centuries and a broad range of traditional undergraduate degree programs.


1819 by Captain Alden Partridge, as the first private military college in the United States and the birthplace of the nation’s Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program.


In the rugged Green Mountains of Vermont, one of the nation’s most spectacular natural areas, offering a vast array of outdoor opportunities year-round.

Northfield, Vermont

A charming, friendly community located 20 minutes from Montpelier, Vermont’s state capital; one hour from Burlington, Vermont’s largest city; and three hours from Montreal and Boston, two of North America’s most cultured cities.


Approximately 2,100 cadets, civilian residents, and commuters attend Norwich University, along with about 1,200 graduate students.


Students from over 45 states and 20 foreign countries.


112 full time—72 percent hold terminal degrees.

Academic Programs

30 bachelor’s degrees, plus a teacher licensure program, and four ROTC programs.


Approximately 80, including academic and professional societies; special interest clubs; literary, theatrical and musical activities; religious, military, and community service organizations; programming committees; and more.


NCAA Division III, 20 varsity sports, a variety of club sports, and unlimited intramural sports opportunities.

Financial Aid/Scholarships

Over $50 million in scholarships, grants, loans, and work-study is available.
